Architect / Landscape Designer
Masakatsu Nishitani
After moving to New Zealand in 1996, I returned to Japan in 2000, later had worked in an architectural design studio and a contraction company. In 2013, I established Comorebi Arquitecto Design Office. Since relocating to Kyoto in 2017, I have been engaged in architectural and landscape design, collaborating with the Architectural Culture Laboratory and Ueyakato Landscape. In 2021, I re-launched my practice with a focus on timber-frame architecture and Japanese garden design.
Carpenters
Founded in 1917, they have specialized in timber architecture, continually refining its craftsmanship. Its expertise has been widely recognized, resulting in international commissions and over 70 years of involvement in assembling and restoring the iconic floats of Kyoto's Gion Festival. By inheriting history and tradition while cultivating reliable skills over generations, the company is dedicated to delivering authentic timber architecture to its clients.

Lighting Designer

I studied interior design at college in Germany, where I fell in love with the European culture and their use of lighting in society. I noticed a stark difference in the ways in which lighting was used in Japan and Europe. Since graduating, I have been a lighting designed based in Tokyo for almost 16 years, where I have worked with amazing interior designers and architects, and have been engaged by high fashion brands for various projects.

Seung Hyun Lee
After earning a degree in economics from Keio University, I studied at the London School of Economics, obtaining an MBA along with AICPA, CIA, and CFA certifications. Following military service as a Major in the Korean UDT/SEALs, I held positions in internal audit at Mitsubishi Corporation, corporate planning at HSBC, and corporate strategy at POSCO.

Our Design Phylosophy
A pursuit for harmony between buildings, gardens and lighting
Our design office name is "Comorebi" that means, "sunlight that filters through the leaves of trees" in Japanese. We want to create a comfortable space such as under "Comorebi". Our philosophy is to develop living spaces that achieve balance and harmony among the three aspects of architecture, landscape, and lighting.
